On February 22, 2024, Lorenz Wedl and Christoph Antretter presented the current Wedl Food Report 2024 in Vienna, which examines the dietary habits of Austrians through a comprehensive, representative survey.
The major trends and insights derived from this are trend-setting for meeting customer needs, assortment management, and the orientation of the trading house.
In Austria, when it comes to nutrition—whether cooking at home or dining out—the focus remains on the tried-and-tested and traditional. Schnitzel, spaghetti, and Gröstl are by far the most popular.
However, there are small but fine and slowly growing niches of health-conscious individuals who are increasingly following trends for changing eating habits. Although still a minority, this group is growing compared to the results of previous Wedl Food Reports.
When dining out, Austrians are more frugal this year than in comparison years—nearly half of all respondents state they go out to eat less often.
Regionality is highly valued and consistently beats organic farming. In the eyes of consumers, regional is automatically viewed as “organic.” Local ingredients and local cuisine are in vogue.
The study serves as a basis for further intensive discussion for the hotel and catering industry, as well as in private circles. Click here for the Wedl Food Report.
