Oberstdorf Resort & Explorer Hotels
Annual,
Group-Wide Employee Survey
Since 2022, IMARK has annually measured satisfaction, retention, and employer attractiveness across all group properties – anonymously, multilingually, and with property-specific evaluations.
The Company
Base Camp for Athletic Alpine Explorers
Based in Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region, Explorer Hotels has been operating design-budget hotels for alpine athletes in the German-speaking Alpine region since 2010. Today, the group comprises eleven properties, each with around 100 rooms – from Oberstdorf, Neuschwanstein, Berchtesgaden, and Garmisch to Montafon, Zillertal, Hinterstoder, Ötztal, Bad Kleinkirchheim, and Stubaital; a twelfth property will open in November 2026 in Bayrischzell.
The brand idea – trendy base camps for athletic alpine explorers – also serves as an internal leadership mandate. Employees act as “Explorer Buddies” on equal footing with guests; the “Explorer Spirit” of trust, personal responsibility, openness, and genuine joy in interacting with people shapes the daily work routine. Together with the properties of the Oberstdorf Resort – including Hotel Mohren, Hotel Oberstdorf, Oberstdorf Hostel, Hotel Birgsau, as well as Wannenkopfhütte and Hörnerhaus – the hotels are managed from a central administration.
The Challenge
Key elements of the assignment:
A brand intended to function as an internal management tool must regularly verify whether it is truly effective in daily work. Added to this is the industry’s starting point: skilled workers are scarce, teams are international, and turnover is structurally high. The survey should therefore not only provide a satisfaction score but also show which levers are actually effective in which property.
-
Annual, anonymous measurement of the most important levers for job satisfaction, retention, and willingness to recommend across all group properties
-
Specific focus on the particularly critical onboarding phase for new employees
-
Conception and implementation of the survey in a way that allows results to be evaluated down to the individual property level and compared year-over-year
The cornerstones of our approach:
The survey is conducted entirely online and anonymously; IMARK acts as an independent institute between the workforce and the company. Each person automatically sees the name and logo of their own property – the questions are identical, allowing for evaluation per property and for the group as a whole.
Anonymous online survey, evaluation exclusively in aggregated form, without identifying individual persons
Three language versions (German, English, Romanian)
Property-specific display via a stored property identifier: logo, company name, and wording automatically adapt – from Hotel Mohren to Oberstdorf Hostel to Wannenkopfhütte
Employee Net Promoter Score on an eleven-point scale from 0 to 10, plus four statements on intent to stay, pride, belonging, and well-being
Dynamic deepening: Those who do not rate management’s interaction with employees favorably are automatically asked for concrete suggestions for improvement
Fixed core question set for time comparisons, annually supplemented with current topics (e.g., annual priorities, review of measures from the previous year)
Methods
Methods and techniques used (among others):
-
Importance-Performance analysis across 17 employer criteria (importance ranking versus evaluation)
-
Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS)
-
Commitment measurement via intent to stay, pride, belonging, and well-being
-
Candidate and onboarding journey for employees in their first six months
-
Time series comparison across annual waves since 2022
Result & Impact
Benefits for Explorer Hotels:
The survey provides an annual, property-specific picture of the team’s sentiment. And with each wave, a time series that shows whether measures are actually effective.
